2. White elephant, tournament rules

Best for: gift chaos with guardrails · Group size: 10–40 · Time: 30–45 min

The gift exchange everyone thinks they know and no two people play the same way — which is why you post the rules on the wall. The card: every gift wrapped, under the announced cap. Draw numbers. Player one opens a gift. Each player after either opens a new gift or steals an opened one; anyone stolen from immediately opens or steals next. A gift freezes after its third steal. No immediate steal-backs. Player one gets one final swap at the end. Ninety percent of white elephant is arguing about rules; print the card and the arguing becomes the fun kind. One more call to make in advance: funny gifts or good gifts. Announce the house style in the invite, because a room split between gag gifts and genuinely nice candles produces one very awkward steal.

3. White elephant: dice edition

Best for: groups who've played classic white elephant to death · Group size: 8–24 · Time: 20–30 min

Everyone holds a wrapped gift, unopened. Take turns rolling one die: 1–2, swap with the person on your left; 3–4, swap right; 5–6, swap with anyone in the room. Rewrite holiday movie plots as bad-faith one-star reviews and read them completely straight: "Parents fly to Paris and forget a child; property crime escalates." "A hairy recluse commits large-scale décor theft; the town responds with singing." Teams write down the title; first correct answer scores. Write fifteen in advance and cut the five weakest at the party. This game costs nothing and routinely outperforms things you paid for.

5. Cookie-off with a real scorecard

Entries are submitted anonymously and numbered. Everyone — or a judge panel of three with strong opinions — scores each entry 1–10 in three categories: taste, looks, and structural integrity. Three to five stations, sixty seconds each, teams rotating round-robin: stack gift boxes one-handed; scoop cotton-ball "snowballs" across a table with a spoon held in your teeth; hook candy canes off a table edge using another candy cane, no hands; shake every jingle bell out of a tissue box strapped to your back. A monitor at each station keeps score; totals win. Loud, fast, zero skill floor — the person who's terrible at everything else wins this one. Test each station yourself beforehand: sixty seconds should be barely enough for a motivated adult, not comfortably enough, or the tension evaporates.

8. Gift-wrap grand prix

Best for: pairs who overestimate themselves · Group size: 6–20, in pairs · Time: 15 min

Each pair wraps the same object using one hand each — one partner's right, the other's left, spare arms behind backs. Score ten points for speed and ten for "would you actually gift this," judged by the room. Run a championship heat with an awkward object. A broom changes people.

Read a line from a winter song, stop mid-phrase, and teams write what comes next. Spelling never counts; spirit does. The debates over "close enough" are the actual content of this game, so appoint a lyric judge who'll enjoy the power a little too visibly.

11. Year-in-review quiz: company edition

Best for: teams with a year worth roasting, gently · Group size: any · Time: 15–20 min

Ten questions about the past twelve months at your company: the launches, the new faces, the great thermostat war, whatever became office lore. Two rules: nothing that punches down at a specific person who didn't volunteer for it, and at least three questions easy enough that the newest hire can score. Done right, it plays as nostalgia for a year people survived together — which is quietly the point of the whole party. Crowdsource question material from a few team leads the week before; the best lore is never the lore you personally witnessed.

12. The plastic-wrap ball

Before the party, wrap small prizes into a ball of plastic wrap, layer by layer, best prize at the center. One player unwraps as fast as they can while their neighbor rolls a pair of dice; doubles means the ball moves to the next person. It is loud, it is dumb, and it has never once failed. Identical kits, twenty minutes on the clock, judged on height, stability, and curb appeal — ten points each. Collapses before judging are judged as they lie. That rule matters more than any other rule in this article; announce it twice. Have a broom ready regardless.

14. Two truths and a lie: holiday edition

As people arrive, each submits two true holiday-season stories about themselves and one lie. The host reads them out between other games all evening, and the room votes. It costs nothing, needs no setup, and reliably surfaces at least one coworker with a genuinely unhinged travel story. For remote teams

Distributed team, or a hybrid party where half the room is a screen? Five of the fourteen adapt cleanly — and there's a longer bench of games to play on Zoom with coworkers when you need it.

The one rule for hybrid parties: never run a game the remote half can only watch. Watching a party through a webcam is worse than not being invited. If half your agenda is white elephant and gingerbread, schedule a separate remote session with the five games above rather than pointing a laptop at the fun — the second option feels inclusive to exactly one person, and it's the person holding the laptop.

The planning timeline

More than three and you're running a decathlon — people also need time to just talk to each other, which is technically the point.

What's the right white elephant price cap?

One number, announced in the invite, low enough that nobody in the room has to think twice about spending it. The gifts are props; the stealing is the game. Enforce the cap gently but visibly, or next year's gifts become an arms race and the year after that becomes a budget line.

How do we keep the party inclusive?
